Longevity implies length. But who wouldn’t want the longest life possible?
As with everything, the intention behind our desires matters most. Do we seek longevity because we want to live as long as possible? Is it fear of death driving us, or is it a genuine desire to make the most of life?
Longevity has a few key elements, as observed in the Blue Zones by Dan Buettner, which include:
Community
Movement
Seasonal food
Nutrient-rich ingredients
Everything in moderation
Spirituality
While these studies offer valuable insights, there's no one-size-fits-all recipe for longevity, and modern life often pulls us away from these ideals.
Some turn to technology to extend life. Take Bryan Johnson, for instance. His formula for longevity relies heavily on data, but it can seem rigid. Where is the nourishment for the soul in such an approach?
We all know it’s not healthy to eat a croissant every morning, but indulgence in moderation is essential to keeping the soul alive. The 80/20 principle of health suggests that while we should aim to live healthily 80% of the time, that 20% of indulgence keeps us balanced and alive.
Health, like life, can be illustrated by a pendulum. Cultivating balance means keeping the pendulum centered, but it’s also good to explore the edges occasionally.
I care about longevity, not because I fear dying young, but because I value health. I want to live a fulfilling life filled with adventures, explorations, and epicurean experiences that engage all my senses. Balance, to me, is attained when we reconnect with nature and our own true nature, finding a way to live respectfully toward ourselves, others, and the planet.
Longevity, to me, is about remembering the wisdom of our ancestors. By reconnecting with nature’s cycles, we can honor our own. Rather than living a linear life disconnected from nature, we can cultivate balance and harmony within our inner and outer worlds.
Longevity is not just about living longer; it’s about living a fulfilling life, in harmony with ourselves and the world around us.
